Even before Bruce Springsteen took the Merriweather Post Pavilion stage in Columbia, MD at Saturday's Power To The People Festival, he already had made the first weekend in Rocktober 2026 a busy and extra-interesting one for Springsteen fans. To wit...

On Friday, the trailer for Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band: Land of Hope & Dreams American Tour (Philadelphia Freedom Cut) [part 3 of 4] dropped. As you can see it in embedded form right below, part 3 is "coming soon." (No more specific information is available at this time:)

Also on Friday, the latest installment in nugs.net's "First Friday" Live Archives monthly-release series dropped. The Rocktober release is Palau Sant Jordi - Barcelona, ESP (CD-cover/streaming-skin title: Barcelona Oct 16, 2002.) This excellent concert from The Rising Tour was the basis for Springsteen's first-ever official release of an entire single concert in any format, in this case home-video: the 2003 Live in Barcelona DVD (now available for streaming, as well.)

The nugs/Live Archives release is the first audio-only release of the October 16, 2002 Barcelona show. It is also newly remixed by Jon Altschiller. Archivist Erik Flannigan's essay on Palau Sant Jordi - Barcelona, ESP (CD-cover/streaming-skin title: Barcelona Oct 16, 2002) argues that Altschiller's remix is "an upgrade" of Brendan O'Brien's 2003 DVD audio mix. Altschiller's mix is noticeably different, for sure, but whether it actually is an improvement over O'Brien's mix seems to fall deep into subjective "your-mileage-may-vary" territory.

One thing's for certain, though; the nugs/Live Archives Palau Sant Jordi - Barcelona, ESP release reveals that the 2003 Live in Barcelona DVD release contained at least a few slightly edited song-performance recordings, as opposed to the full, unedited recording of the entire show that's contained in the new nugs/Live Archives release. Below, you can compare for yourself the newly released version of "Into The Fire" (a truly beautiful performance and a major highlight of this stellar concert) to the version from the 2003 Live in Barcelona DVD. In addition to the differences to be found in each mix, you also can hear that the DVD version clocks in about a half-minute shorter than the newly released nugs/Live Archives version, because a bit of the performance's repetition of "May your strength bring us strength...," etc. was edited back in 2003:

And click here to read "You Don't Need No Baggage, Just Get On Board," archivist Erik Flannigan's essay on the release, which also explains and updates why to date there have been only two nugs/Live Archives releases from The Rising Tour (the previous one - Olympiastadion, Helsinki, Finland, June 16, 2003 - having been released almost a decade ago,) with apparently no "cure for the tour’s Genex recording system contagion" on the horizon anytime soon.

Now on to MUCH better news, with Bruce live and in person, onstage in Rocktober 2026, closing out Saturday's Power To The People Festival on a note of hope, resistance, sanity, and solidarity. His set began in solo-acoustic mode with "Streets of Minneapolis," introduced in the same manner that he's been introducing at each performance since just before this year's Land of Hope & Dreams American Tour.

After that, he invited Joan Baez (introducing her as "a woman who has been a fighting and positive voice for social change, for justice and equality, in every decade since the 1960s... one of my great inspirations...") to join him in a beautiful acoustic duet-version of Dylan's "Chimes of Freedom," the song that closed every performance of his tour this year in its full-band Byrds-inspired arrangement, of course.

Then it was time to rock, with The Power The People Festival's key organizer/curator Tom Morello and his kick-ass band backing Bruce on powerful versions of The Clash's "Clampdown," Springsteen's "The Ghost of Tom Joad," CCR/John Fogerty's "Fortunate Son" (with special guests Dave Matthews and Nathaniel Rateliff,) Neil Young's "Rockin' In The Free World" (with special guests Dave Grohl and Dave Matthews, featuring Bruce shredding on guitar as well as delivering some full-throttle vocals, and a killer updated final verse sung by Matthews (with it yet to be confirmed exactly who wrote the new verse.)

Springsteen et al. then were joined onstage, at Morello's invitation, by all of the Festival's performers for a double-shot ensemble/audience singalong finale of Woody Guthrie's "This Land Is Your Land" in a great hard-rocking/hip-hop-tinged version with Morello - of course - making sure that those frequently-censored versions got sung, to boot, followed by all voices raised together one more time to sing John Lennon's "Power To The People."

If you weren't there in person on Saturday, you could watch the entire show live in real time, presented in professional audio/video, for free on MS NOW's YouTube channel. Unfortunately, that footage has since been pulled, but here's hoping that it will be released in some other form rather quickly, possibly to raise even more funds for the Festival's two main beneficiaries (both nonpartisan organizations:) VoteRiders, which informs communities about ID laws, equips partner organizations to expand voting access, advocates for pro-voter policies, and provides free one-on-one help to individuals to secure an accepted form of ID to vote, and HeadCount, which works to register voters – especially younger voters – at concerts, festivals, and online, making it easier to register to vote, learn about elections, and take action.

In the meantime, you can scour YouTube, etc. for various fan-recorded options. While doing so, we also highly recommend Rolling Stone's Power-To-The-People-Festival-focused interview with Tom Morello, which includes some interesting behind-the-scenes insights from Morello on Springsteen's involvement with the Festival, etc.

Power to the people!
